Best Things to Do at Harry Potter World in Orlando, FL!

A close-up view of the iconic red Hogwarts Express locomotive, number 5972, sits at Hogsmeade station in Harry Potter World under a clear blue sky. This photo-op favorite connects Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade, offering guests a magical train journey between the two lands of the Wizarding World.

If you’re heading to Orlando and wondering about the best things to do at Harry Potter World, you’re in the right place!

After working at Universal myself and being a life-long Harry Potter fan, I’ve compiled all of the must-have experiences when visiting the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida. From riding the Hogwarts Express in both directions to sipping frozen Butterbeer to finding hidden gems, there is so much to see at Harry Potter World.

This post breaks everything down by park so you know exactly what to prioritize in both Universal and Islands, since Harry Potter World spans both of them!

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or coming back for another dose of magic, there’s always something new to discover. Every time I visit, I find something I missed before!

Things to Do in Diagon Alley at Universal Studios

Walking into Diagon Alley from the London waterfront area of Universal Studios is a jaw-dropping moment.

Hidden behind a brick wall and guarded by Kings Cross Station, this area is packed with wizarding detail, theatrical shops, and a surprisingly immersive atmosphere.

After visiting the Harry Potter Studio Tour in London, I can confirm that our Diagon Alley in Orlando feels even more like the real thing!

Below is a compilation of my top recommendations for things to do in Diagon Alley!

Don’t forget to grab this before your trip. The perfect hat for your park day at Universal Orlando!

Ride Escape from Gringotts

This is my favorite ride at Universal Studios and a must-do on your Harry Potter World Itinerary! It blends storytelling, special effects, and a dark ride coaster into one of the most cinematic experiences in the park.

You’ll walk through the grand marble Gringotts bank lobby under the watchful eyes of animatronic goblins before heading deep “underground”.

The ride itself features 3D projections, sudden turns, and appearances from key characters like Bellatrix and Voldemort.

It’s the only ride in Diagon Alley, and the level of detail sets the tone for everything else!

Explore Knockturn Alley

Hidden in plain sight, Knockturn Alley is a shaded, dimly-lit section that many guests walk past. Inside, you’ll find the iconic shop Borgin and Burkes just like in the movies, which sells dark artifacts, skulls, and cursed objects.

Lana’s Insider Tip: Make sure to keep an eye out for references to the movie in this store!

The area also includes multiple spell locations for interactive wands and sound effects that activate as you walk through. It’s an ideal break from the Florida heat while diving into a darker corner of the wizarding world!

Watch the Fire-Breathing Dragon

Towering over Gringotts Bank is a massive dragon that breathes real fire at random intervals. The flame is intense enough that you can feel the heat from the street below.

While the roar draws crowds every few minutes, the timing is unpredictable — just enough to keep people lingering, waiting for the next blast.

AND MORE!

Eat a British Meal at the Leaky Cauldron

A quick-service but sit-down restaurant, the Leaky Cauldron serves traditional British pub fare in a rustic, medieval-style dining hall. Menu items include cottage pie, bangers and mash, and toffee pudding.

The atmosphere mirrors the Leaky Cauldron from the films, with flickering lanterns and floating beams. Unfortunately, there’s no bed and breakfast upstairs that you can stay in!

My favorite menu item is the fish and chips with a cold glass of beer! But everything is really good, especially for theme park food.

Have Ice Cream at Florean Fortescue’s

A lovely easter egg from the books, Florean Fortescue’s ice cream parlor offers a selection of uniquely flavored soft-serve and scoop options right in front of Gringott’s.

Guests can try flavors like Butterbeer, Earl Grey and Lavender, Sticky Toffee Pudding, or Chocolate Chili. My favorite is the Chocolate Raspberry though!

It’s a popular mid-day stop to beat the heat, but the line typically moves fast! This is one of my favorite things to do in Harry Potter World, no matter the time of year.

Shop for a Wand at Ollivander’s

Ollivanders is more than just a storefront — it’s an experience!

Inside, a short interactive “wand chooses the wizard” show lets one lucky guest try out a few spells before their wand selects them. Just like in the movies! The leader of the show even looks like Ollivander.

It’s especially magical for kids, but fun to watch even if you don’t get picked. After the show, guests can shop a wide range of character wands or special interactive ones to use throughout the parks.

However, you don’t have to wait in line for this show to purchase a wand – they’re available throughout the park.

Cast Spells with an Interactive Wand

With an interactive wand in hand, guests can cast spells at marked locations throughout Diagon Alley and Knockturn Alley.

Spell spots are marked with medallions on the ground and include animations like levitating quills, unlocking doors, or making objects light up. Each wand comes with a map, but part of the fun is discovering new spots yourself!

Beware, you may get wet from some of them 😉

Buy a Robe at Madam Malkin’s

For those who want to dress the part, Madam Malkin’s offers house robes, scarves, ties, and more. My favorite item, however, is the iconic “H” and “R” sweaters that Mrs. Weasley knits for Harry and Ron!

While the robes are definitely a splurge, it’s one of the few places to get authentic ones straight from the source. They are very nice quality and can even be embroidered.

Also, make sure to check out the mirror inside the store that gives fun (and sometimes rude) commentary on your outfit choices!

Exchange Muggle Money at Gringotts Bank

Around the corner from the Gringotts ride you’ll find the Gringotts Money Exchange, a little hidden gem inside Harry Potter World!

Here, guests can trade U.S. currency for Gringotts banknotes in $10 or $20 USD denominations. These can be used like gift cards around the Wizarding World. Luckily, the exchange rate is 1:1 and you can use credit cards to purchase!

And don’t worry, you can exchange back for real dollars if you don’t spend all of your Wizarding money.

Lana’s Hidden Gem: Inside the exchange, the goblin teller behind the counter interacts and talks back to you if you look him in the eye!

Catch a Live Show

Diagon Alley features two live performances throughout the day at the small stage in the back corner of the park!

One is Celestina Warbeck and the Banshees, a jazzy musical show straight from the books. The other is a puppet-style retelling of the Tales of Beedle the Bard, which you’ll recognize from the Deathly Hallows movie!

Both are short, easy to catch, and well worth a stop if you see a crowd forming. It’s the perfect spot to cool off under the shade and enjoy your ice cream while watching a show.

A live performance of The Tales of Beedle the Bard unfolds in Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida, featuring intricate puppets, colorful costumes, and dramatic storytelling. This magical stage show is a hidden gem to include in your Harry Potter World itinerary for fans of wizarding lore.

Get a Harry Potter–Themed Beer at the Fountain of Fair Fortune

Tucked between Florean Fortescue’s and Knockturn Alley, the Fountain of Fair Fortune is one of the best places to grab a themed drink without the sit-down wait of the Leaky Cauldron.

Along with Butterbeer, they serve a selection of exclusive Harry Potter–themed beers brewed just for Universal — like Wizard’s Brew (a smooth, dark stout) and Dragon Scale (a more balanced amber lager).

It’s a fun way to cool off and try something you can’t find outside the park. There’s usually a small crowd here, but the line moves quickly!

Visit Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes

Bright, bold, and impossible to miss, Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes brings Fred and George’s joke shop to life right in the heart of Diagon Alley.

The storefront is topped with a massive moving figure tipping his magician’s hat, and the inside is packed floor-to-ceiling with colorful products and magical mischief. It looks just like the store in the movies!

You’ll find Extendable Ears, Pygmy Puffs, U-No-Poo, and all kinds of silly (but souvenir-worthy) gags from the books and movies.

Even if you’re not planning to buy anything, it’s worth popping in just to soak up the chaos and clever details — including the Skiving Snackboxes stacked behind the counter.

See Kreacher at Grimmauld Place

In the London section of the park just outside Diagon Alley, make sure to look up at the windows of 12 Grimmauld Place. It looks identical to the one in the movie, so you can’t miss it!

Every few minutes, Kreacher the house-elf peeks out from behind the curtains! Most people think you have to knock on the door below to get him to pop up, but it’s just a timed effect!

This is one of my favorite hidden gems at Harry Potter World!

brown and yellow brick buildings with an animatronic house elf peaking through the window. This is the exterior of Grimmauld Place at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Talk to the Knight Bus Conductor

Also outside Diagon Alley, the triple-decker Knight Bus is parked along the Universal waterfront with the famous talking shrunken head in the window. The conductor interacts with guests and poses for photos, and the head will often chime in with cheeky remarks!

While you can’t go fully inside the bus, there is a small section at the back where you can step into it and look inside. It’s completely themed with beds just like in the movies!

Call the Ministry from the Red Phone Booth

Right next to the Knight Bus, you’ll find a classic red London phone booth. But it’s not just a prop!

Make sure to step inside and dial MAGIC (62442) — you’ll hear a pre-recorded message from the Ministry of Magic. It’s a clever detail many guests walk right past!

Take the Hogwarts Express to Hogsmeade

One of the most unique aspects of the Wizarding World is the ability to ride the Hogwarts Express between parks! If you only have one day at Harry Potter World, this is a must-do so you get to see both parks.

The journey between lands features different visuals, characters, and moments depending on the direction you travel — so it’s worth doing both ways.

However, the journey from Diagon Alley to Hogsmeade is extra special because you get to walk through the wall of Platform 9 and 3/4, just like in the movies!

Unfortunately, this special effect doesn’t exist when you take the train from Hogsmeade back to Diagon.

Note: You’ll need a Park-to-Park ticket to ride the Hogwarts Express!

A bright red Hogwarts Express train is parked under a glass canopy in King’s Cross Station at Harry Potter World Diagon Alley. Loading instructions are displayed above, and the queue is empty, ready for riders.

Things to Do in Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure

The moment you step into Hogsmeade, with its snow-covered rooftops and view of Hogwarts Castle in the distance, it feels like stepping into a scene from the movies.

This side of the Wizarding World is more ride-heavy and has some of the best-themed areas in the entire park. Below are my favorite things to do in Hogsmeade Village at Islands of Adventure!

Ride Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure

Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure is the newest Harry Potter themed ride and one of the top things to do at Harry Potter World!

This is hands-down one of the best rides in all of Universal — if you can get on it! Although it opened a few years ago, this ride still usually has a 2+ hour wait time.

The ride itself is a high-speed roller coaster through the Forbidden Forest, filled with sharp turns, animatronics, and a surprise drop.

Riders can choose either the motorbike or the sidecar, and the experience is slightly different depending on your seat. If you like thrills, I’d choose the motorbike side!

It often has the longest wait in the park, so get there first thing in the morning or ride later in the day when people have left the park.

Explore Hogwarts Castle and Ride the Forbidden Journey

While this used to be the flagship ride of Harry Potter World, I actually think walking through the queue for Forbidden Journey is better than the ride itself!

This ride takes place inside the Hogwarts Castle, and you’ll pass through Dumbledore’s office, the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, and even the Gryffindor common room as you make your way to the ride.

The ride itself is a mix of motion simulation and practical effects as you fly alongside Harry through the castle grounds, past a dragon, and even into a Quidditch match.

If you’re prone to motion sickness, this one can be a bit intense — but it’s still a must-do at least once to see the queue!

Ride Flight of the Hippogriff

This family-friendly coaster is short and sweet, making it perfect for younger fans or those who prefer gentler rides. The queue winds past Hagrid’s hut, and you’ll get a great view of the castle from the top of the first lift hill. Keep an eye out for Buckbeak bowing before your train takes off!

It’s also one of the few coasters in the park that consistently has a manageable wait time.

Try All Three Types of Butterbeer

Drinking Butterbeer is arguably one of the most popular things to do at Harry Potter World, and Hogsmeade offers multiple spots to grab one!

You can find it inside the Three Broomsticks or at one of two outdoor Butterbeer stands — one just outside the restaurant and another closer to the entrance of Hogwarts Castle. The lines may look long, but they tend to move fast.

There are three varieties: cold, frozen, and hot (seasonal). The cold version is slightly fizzy and served like a soda, the frozen one is slushy and super refreshing on hot days, and the hot Butterbeer (available in winter) is creamy and rich — almost like a butterscotch latte.

All three have the same signature flavor: a mix of shortbread and butterscotch, topped with a thick, sweet foam.

My personal favorite is frozen — it hits just right after a few hours in the Florida sun!

And no, there is no alcohol in Butterbeer, so anyone can enjoy it!!

Have Lunch at the Three Broomsticks

This rustic tavern looks exactly like you’d imagine from the books and movies — wood beams, stone fireplaces, and floating candles. It’s a quick-service spot, so no reservations are needed, but it can get busy around peak meal times.

The menu includes hearty British fare like rotisserie chicken, shepherd’s pie, and fish and chips. There’s also a kids’ menu and plenty of drink options beyond Butterbeer, including Pumpkin Fizz and a variety of beers on tap.

There’s an outdoor seating area in the back with great views of Hogwarts Castle.

Lana’s Insider Tip: If mobile ordering is available, it’s sometimes possible to sit outside without waiting in the main indoor line!

Get a Layered Beer at Hog’s Head Pub

Tucked inside the Three Broomsticks, the Hog’s Head Pub is an underrated stop that most guests miss. Inside, you can order Butterbeer, Pumpkin Juice, or Fire Whiskey, but the real highlight is the secret beer option!

You used to be able to order this “Deathly Hallows” beer from the bar, which was a layered beer concoction with 3 distinct colors.

Unfortunately, nowadays you have to tell the bartender exactly what you want, since the term “Deathly Hallows” is a copyright they don’t have access to!

If you want to order this, here is what to tell them!
Strongbow Cider (bottom), Hog’s Head Brew (middle), and Guinness (top).

The bar itself also has fun details — including a moving animatronic hog’s head behind the counter that snorts occasionally.

Buy a Chocolate Frog at Honeydukes

If you’re a fan of the books or movies, you know Honeydukes!

This shop is packed with iconic sweets straight from the wizarding world — but the most recognizable has to be the Chocolate Frog. Each frog comes with a collectible wizard card, and yes, they’re as huge (and solid) as they look.

Other standouts in the shop include Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans, Fizzing Whizzbees, and Exploding Bonbons. The colorful displays and whimsical packaging make this spot a must-visit, even if you’re just browsing!

Listen to Moaning Myrtle in the Bathroom

This might just be my favorite hidden gem at Harry Potter World!

Inside the women’s restroom in Hogsmeade, you’ll hear familiar wails and complaints echoing through the space — it’s Moaning Myrtle!

This small detail often catches people off guard, but it’s one of those immersive touches that really brings the world to life.

The best part? It’s not in the men’s bathroom, which is true to the storyline from the books and movies.

Mail a Letter with a Hogsmeade Postmark

At the Owl Post store in Hogsmeade, guests can send postcards and letters stamped with a special Hogsmeade postmark.

It’s a fun, authentic souvenir that’s both personal and affordable — especially if you want to surprise a Harry Potter fan back home!

The shop also carries a wide variety of stationery, quills, ink, and writing supplies to complete the theme.

Admire the Storefronts and Hidden Details

Hogsmeade is packed with visual easter eggs for fans of the series. From the tiny teashop Madam Puddifoot’s to enchanted snowmen, spell-casting mannequins, and mandrakes in windows, almost every corner has something to notice.

While you can’t go inside every store, every single storefront is themed to the land and worth checking out! This goes for Diagon Alley as well.

Watch the Frog Choir or Triwizard Spirit Rally

Throughout the day, two short shows take place on the small outdoor stage in Hogsmeade. The Frog Choir features Hogwarts students singing a cappella alongside giant croaking frogs, while the Triwizard Spirit Rally includes Durmstrang and Beauxbatons students performing choreographed routines.

Both shows last just a few minutes, are easy to catch between rides, and add great atmosphere to the land.

Ride the Hogwarts Express Back to Diagon Alley

Most people don’t know this, but the return trip to Diagon Alley from Hogsmeade is different than the ride in the other direction!

This direction features new scenes and interactions, so it’s worth riding both ways. It’s also a great way to rest your feet while staying in the Wizarding World.

Just remember, you’ll need that Park-to-Park ticket to ride!
