Before we dive into all the exciting details of what Harry Potter World has to offer, there are some important topics to cover, including how to get to Harry Potter World, what tickets you need, and more!
If you’ve never been to Universal Orlando before, you might be a bit confused on the overall layout, so I will clear all that up as well!
Quick Tips for Harry Potter World
Park to Park Tickets: You’ll need a Park-to-Park ticket (otherwise known as a Park hopper) to visit both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley in the same day or to ride the Hogwarts Express between the two lands!
Hogwarts Express: The Hogwarts Express takes you between Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios. There is a show inside the train that changes depending on the direction you’re going, so I recommend riding it both ways!
Express Passes: If you’re visiting during peak season or it’s your first time, I highly recommend a Universal Express Pass, which allows you to skip the line and save a ton of time!
Early Park Admission: Staying at a Universal Orlando Resort means you can access the parks an hour early (which makes a HUGE difference). Plus, you can also save on parking costs at City Walk, as all the resorts are connected to the parks by water taxis, walking paths, and/or shuttles, all free of charge if you are staying there.
Universal App: Make sure to download the Universal Orlando app on your phone before your visit! You can conveniently store your digital park tickets, check wait times, connect to free wifi, and more!
Park Hours: Park hours vary based on the time of year and which park you are visiting. Make sure to check on the Universal website or in the app for the opening and closing hours based on your date!

Where is Harry Potter World?
Did you know Harry Potter World isn’t just in Orlando? Universal Studios has brought the Wizarding World to life in several locations around the globe, including:
- Orlando, Florida (Universal Orlando Resort)
- Hollywood, California (Universal Studios Hollywood)
- Osaka, Japan (Universal Studios Japan)
- Beijing, China (Universal Beijing Resort)
While each park offers its own magical experience, Orlando’s Harry Potter World is by far the most immersive.
The other parks only have the Hogsmeade portion, which includes the iconic Hogwarts castle and two different rides (Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and Flight of the Hippogriff).
Universal Studios Japan does have the black lake surrounding the Hogwarts castle, which I’ll admit is great for photos!
Universal Orlando, however, is the only location with two separate areas, Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, and they are connected by the iconic Hogwarts Express train!
Diagon Alley and its flagship ride, Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, are reason enough to visit Harry Potter World in Orlando (you’ll see why later!).
But in addition to Diagon Alley, Orlando also has the new Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure rollercoaster in Hogsmeade, one of my favorite theme park rides ever.
If you’re a die-hard fan, you should prioritize visiting the Harry Potter World in Orlando so you can experience the best of the best!
With that said, the rest of this blog post is going to focus on the Orlando Harry Potter World!

Getting to Harry Potter World in Orlando
Park Tickets Explained
One of the most important things to know when planning a trip to Harry Potter World is that Universal Orlando has two theme parks right next to each other: Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure.
As mentioned above, there are two lands in Harry Potter World Orlando: Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley.
Each land is located in each park: Hogsmeade is in Islands of Adventure and Diagon Alley is in Universal Studios. They are connected directly to each other by the Hogwarts Express train (just like in the books and movies).
To make the most of your visit to Harry Potter World, you’ll want to purchase a Park-to-Park ticket, which means you’ll be able to access both parks (and both lands) in one day.
You NEED a Park-to-Park ticket to ride on the Hogwarts Express since it takes you between Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios (or vice versa).
Naturally, park-to-park tickets are more expensive than the standard, one park per day tickets. While you can absolutely save money and buy the latter, you won’t get to experience the Hogwarts Express this way (which would be a bummer!).
Important Note: Tickets to Universal Orlando are expensive. However, the more days you spend at the parks, the cheaper they become. I recommend at least 2 days to experience both Universal and Islands.
If your budget allows, Universal also offers “Express passes” for an extra fee. These passes allow you to skip the regular lines and save hours of waiting. If you are visiting in the summer, I think an Express pass is absolutely worth the money.
Location in the Parks
Now that you understand how to access the lands and which tickets you’ll need, it’s time to make your way into the park and experience the magic!
If you’ve never been to Universal Orlando before, it’s important to note these parks are huge, and they don’t just have Harry Potter World in them!
Both Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure have tons of other fun lands and rides in them, but if you are primarily visiting to see Harry Potter World, I highly recommend visiting those lands first before the crowds arrive.
I personally would start at Diagon Alley, which tends to be less crowded first thing in the morning. To get to Diagon Alley, you’ll need to enter Universal Studios through City Walk, which connects the Universal Resorts areas and the two main theme parks.
Getting to Diagon Alley
Diagon Alley is located in the northwest corner of the park (the map below does not show true north but is angled based on the entrance of the park).

When you walk through the entrance of Universal Studios, the fastest way is to continue walking straight until you hit the end of “New York” area, and then make a right. You’ll pass by the Mummy ride, then Fast and the Furious in San Fransisco, until you reach the outside of Diagon Alley, aka London.
In the London area, you’ll find a few landmarks both from real life and the books, like the Knight Bus, the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, Grimmauld Palace, Leicester Square, a red phone booth, and of course, King’s Cross Station!
There’s a lot in this area, so you might not notice the famous Diagon Alley immediately.
In fact, tons of people who visit Diagon Alley actually walk right past it. I can’t tell you how many times when I was working in the park, people would ask me “Where’s Diagon Alley?” when they were standing RIGHT in front of it.
Here’s where the magic begins! Just like in the books, Diagon Alley is shielded from Muggle eyes. When you’re outside of it, you’ll only see a building facade. However, if you walk through the brick walls, you’ll find the iconic Diagon Alley hidden in plain sight!
Getting to Hogsmeade
If you decide to visit Hogsmeade first, you’ll want to head to Islands of Adventure (on the left side of City Walk).
Once you enter Islands, Hogsmeade and the Hogwarts Castle are located at the very back of the park, as shown on the map below.

Islands of Adventure forms a giant loop, so there are technically two ways to reach Hogsmeade. When you enter Islands, you’ll have the option to go right or left. The fastest way is to turn right and walk through Seuss Landing, past the Lost Continent, until you reach Hogsmeade!
If you come from this direction, you’ll first pass Hogsmeade station, where the Hogwarts Express arrives and departs. Once you walk under the Hogsmeade sign, you’ll enter the Village of Hogsmeade, and the Hogwarts Castle is just on the other side!
Everything To Do at Harry Potter World
There is no shortage of magical experiences waiting for you inside Harry Potter World, from tasting your first sip of Butterbeer to screaming your lungs out on one of the coasters!
Harry Potter World in Orlando has an unbelievable collection of rides, shows, restaurants, and stores that will make you feel like a real life wizard or witch! Not to mention the fact that you actually can cast SPELLS – more on that later!
Here is a compilation of ALL the different things to do at Harry Potter World Orlando.
Rides & Attractions
If you’re visiting the parks because you love thrilling and immersive attractions, I promise the rides at Harry Potter World deliver!
And what I personally love is how all of the rides are totally different from each other! Each ride system complements the story-telling aspect of the ride and transports you right into the books and movies, which all Harry Potter fans will appreciate.
Below I’ll break down the different rides on both sides of Harry Potter World so you know what to expect!
Note: Most rides at Universal Studios require you to get a locker to store your loose articles, backpacks, etc. These are free of charge, unless you have a very large bag. I typically wear a fanny pack, which don’t require lockers!

Don’t forget to grab this before your trip. The perfect hat for your park day at Universal Orlando!
Rides at Hogsmeade (Islands of Adventure)
The majority of the rides at Harry Potter World are located on the Hogsmeade side in Islands of Adventure. They are:
Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure
The newest Harry Potter ride (and the most thrilling)! This rollercoaster zips you through the Forbidden Forest on Hagrid’s motorbike, encountering magical creatures like Fluffy the three-headed dog and Blast-Ended Skrewts along the way.
You don’t go upside down, but you do catch some speed! I had the opportunity to help with some of the testing on this ride and loved every second of it. This ride replaced the famous Dueling Dragons.
Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey
Forbidden Journey is the flagship ride of Harry Potter World! This indoor ride blends motion simulation, animatronics, and 4D effects as you soar over the castle grounds, dodge a dragon, and escape Dementors.
My personal opinion? The best part of this ride is the queue!! The ride takes place inside the Hogwarts Castle, so the line takes you through iconic locations like the Gryffindor common room, Dumbledore’s office, and more!
Note: You may get dizzy and nauseous on this ride if you are prone to motion sickness.
Flight of the Hippogriff
Perfect for younger visitors or anyone who prefers a calmer coaster, this ride offers a quick but fun trip through Hogsmeade. Plus, you’ll pass by Hagrid’s hut and catch a glimpse of Buckbeak!
- Entrance to Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey
- Hagrids Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure Ride
Rides at Diagon Alley (Universal Studios)
Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts
This ride is my personal favorite ride at any theme park!! Set inside the iconic Gringotts Bank, you’ll join Harry, Ron, and Hermione on a mission to escape goblins, Death Eaters, and a fire-breathing dragon.
Escape from Gringotts perfectly blends screens and set pieces to make you feel like you’re actually in the lower levels of Gringotts. Not to mention, the beginning of the queue is almost identical to the movie, with animatronic goblin bank tellers that look freakishly real.
The Hogwarts Express
While not your typical “ride”, one of the most magical experiences at Harry Potter World is riding the Hogwarts Express.
As mentioned, the Hogwarts Express is a real train ride that connects Diagon Alley to Hogsmeade (and vice versa), and therefore connects Islands of Adventure to Universal Studios. This means you’ll need a Park-to-Park Ticket to ride the Hogwarts Express.
Note: As the day goes on, the wait times for the train get longer and longer. I’ve seen it as low as 10 minutes and as high as 120 minutes.
Getting to the Hogwarts Express
You can board the Hogwarts Express from Hogsmeade Station, which is located right next to the entrance to Hogsmeade Village in Islands of Adventure.
The queue here is smaller and designed to make it feel like you’re really departing from the Wizarding World back to London.
Or, if you’re taking the train from Diagon Alley, you’ll board from King’s Cross Station in Universal Studios.
To get to King’s Cross, you have to walk out of Diagon Alley through the brick wall back into London (just like in real life!). This station is designed to look just like a London Underground station, and it delivers!
One unique feature King’s Cross Station has that Hogsmeade Station doesn’t is Platform 9 & 3/4.
Again, just like the books and movies. If you’re familiar, Harry and company have to run through the wall between Platforms 9 and 10 to get to Platform 9 and 3/4. So of course Universal had to replicate that fun twist!
(I’ll save the exact details so you can experience it yourself, but just know that only King’s Cross Station at Universal Studious has that fun experience while waiting in line for the Hogwarts Express).
Riding the Hogwarts Express
While you wait on the platform, you’ll be told which carriage to enter (they each seat 8 people). Once inside, the compartments are fully enclosed with a real sliding door and everything!
While each compartment has a “window”, it’s actually a video screen. Or else, you’d get to see into the Universal backlot and employee area!
The video screen window is where most of the “show” takes place along the 4-minute train ride. The screen makes it look like you are actually leaving King’s Cross station, traveling through bustling London and into the countryside before reaching Hogsmeade Station and Hogwarts Castle!
There are some familiar faces and additional effects along the way, but I won’t ruin the whole experience for you 😉
Important Note: The video that is displayed and effects you’ll encounter are different on the two routes (Diagon Alley to Hogsmeade and vice versa!). So, if you want to experience every detail, make sure to ride the train both ways! (This is why I recommend two days at Harry Potter World!).
Shows & Experiences
While some people come to Universal for the rides, I personally think the shows and experiences at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is what makes it stand out as the best theme park area in the world.
I mean, where else can you cast spells in real life and watch the ladies of Beauxbatons twirl ribbons?!
No-Wait Shows at Harry Potter World
Both Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade have regular live shows or live performances throughout the day that you can catch while strolling through the land in between rides.
These performances don’t have a line or wait time, they happen sporadically throughout the day! You can find the show times in the Universal app, which vary based on time of year.
Upon entering Diagon Alley, turn right after passing Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes and just past the food stand, you’ll find a small stage in the “Carkitt Market” area. This is where the below shows take place:
Celestina Warbeck and the Banshees
This jazzy, high-energy show features Celestina, known as the “singing sorceress,” performs with her band, belting out fun magical hits like “You Stole My Cauldron but You Can’t Have My Heart.” Don’t be surprised if you don’t recognize the characters, this is definitely a nod to the books!
The Tales of Beedle the Bard
This action-packed puppet show brings “The Tale of the Three Brothers” from the Deathly Hallows to life, similar to how it was portrayed in the movies!
Similarly in Hogsmeade, there are two main performances at a small stage right in between the Hogwarts Castle and Hogsmeade Village (just look for the large rock structure in front of Flight of the Hippogriff). Here, you’ll find the following performances throughout the day:
The Frog Choir
A nod to a random scene in the Prisoner of Azkaban movie, this performance showcases a group of Hogwarts students singing a cappella while their frogs croak along.
Triwizard Spirit Rally
A fun connection to the Goblet of Fire movie, students from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang put on performances to rally support for the Triwizard Tournament.
Ollivander’s Wand Shop Experience
Somewhere between a show and a ride lies the Ollivander’s Wand Shop experience, one of the most underrated things to do at Harry Potter World!
This interactive experience recreates the famous moment when “the wand chooses the wizard”.
There is actually an Ollivander’s in both Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade (unlike the books), so you can choose whichever has the shorter wait time!
You’ll wait in a queue similar to a ride, and once inside, a small group is brought into Ollivanders’ workshop.
The wandkeeper will choose one person from the group (often a child, but not always!) to find their “perfect” wand. Special effects like glowing light, wind, and magical sounds make the moment feel just like Harry’s did.
Even if you’re not chosen, it’s still a fun experience to watch!
Once the show is over, you’ll be ushered into the main store where you can see and purchase wands from all the characters you know and love (or hate), like Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore, Voldemort, Bellatrix, and more!
This includes normal wands and interactive wands, which I’ll cover in the next section!
Interactive Wand Experience
Arguably one of the coolest parts about Harry Potter World is the interactive wand experience you can have throughout the parks.
You can purchase a wand that allows you to actually cast spells in various locations through Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley. These wands cost around $65, while the standard, non-interactive wands cost around $35.
When you purchase an interactive wand, you’ll be given a printed map that shows the location of each spell spot.
Throughout the land, the exact spots are marked by medallions on the ground that include the name of the spell and the pattern to follow to cast the spell (which also can be found on the map!).
Some spots will have a short line of people waiting, while some won’t! At night, the spell effects are even more magical, so save some spell-casting for the evening.
My favorite spell to cast is “Incendio” at Flimflam’s Lanterns in Diagon Alley.
Pro Tip: If the spell doesn’t work right away, try smaller and more deliberate motions. Sometimes there is an attendant nearby who can help.

Food & Drink
While Epcot might have the whole “drinking around the world” thing nailed down, drinking (and eating) around Harry Potter World sounds way more fun to me!
As you can probably tell, Universal focuses on creating immersive experiences throughout the entire land, and the food and drink at Harry Potter World is no different.
You can drink Butterbeer at the Hog’s Head, eat fish and chips in the Leaky Cauldron, and savor ice cream at Florean Fortescue’s, just like your favorite Harry Potter characters.
Below is a quick summary of all the different food and drink options at Harry Potter World!
Sit Down Restaurants
There are two main sit-down restaurants at Harry Potter World: The Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade and the Leaky Cauldron in Diagon Alley.
At both restaurants, you’ll order first and then sit down and your food will be brought to you.
The Three Broomsticks is located right in the middle of Hogsmeade Village, across from Hargrid’s Motorbike Adventure. This is my preferred place to eat in Universal because the food is actually delicious, not your typical theme park food!
They have classic American and British food like rotisserie chicken, spareribs, shepherd’s pie, fish and ships, and more! Our favorite thing to get is the Great Feast, which serves four and is perfect for small groups or families.
In the back corner of the Three Broomsticks, you’ll find the Hog’s Head bar, one of our favorite spots in Harry Potter World! Here, you can get themed drinks like Pumpkin Juice or a Butterbeer, but they also have a full bar including beer, wine, and spirits.
The Leaky Cauldron is located in Diagon Alley, right on the left when you walk in through the bricks! Known for its rustic atmosphere, the Leaky Cauldron serves hearty British food like bangers and mash, toad in the hole, and beef stew. Picky eaters might struggler here.

Quick Service Spots
While the two main sit down restaurants will be your best bet for full meals, there are plenty of quick service spots throughout both lands that sell refreshments and snacks.
First up: Butterbeer! Because you can’t come to Harry Potter World and NOT have Butterbeer. The drink tastes mostly of butterscotch and can be served cold, hot, or frozen (and dairy free!).
Almost all restaurants and quick service places serve Butterbeer, but I love to get it from the main Butterbeer cart in the middle of Hogsmeade for the full experience.
Over in Diagon Alley, there are many more quick service places to choose from. There’s the Hopping Pot, which is right next to the performance stage. Here, you can grab a snack like Cornish pasties or a drink like Fishy Green Ale.
As you walk from here towards Gringotts Bank, you’ll find the Eternelle’s Elixir of Refreshment, where you can choose a fun-colored elixir and pour it into your Gilly Water (which is just normal water).
On the other side of Diagon Alley (across from the bathrooms) is a little hidden gem called The Fountain of Fair Fortune. This spot normally doesn’t have a long line, where you can grab a fun Harry Potter themed speciality beer like Wizard’s Brew or Dragon Scale!
Right next to the Fountain of Fair Fortune is the incredible Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlor – another book nod! They have your typical traditional flavors, as well as some more obscure (and delicious) options like Early Grey Lavender, Chocolate Chili, and of course, Butterbeer!
Lastly, outside of Diagon Alley in the London area, you’ll find the London Taxi Cart, which serves jacket potatoes (which is the British term for a baked potato!). They are loaded with yummy toppings!
Shops and Storefronts
We’ve covered rides, shows, and food and drink. You might be thinking: what is left?!
Well, if you know anything about Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade from the books or movies, you’ll know that the stores are actually at the front of the story. And like I’ve mentioned, Universal doesn’t miss when it comes to story telling.
I am working on a full guide to the different shops and stores at Harry Potter World, but here’s quick summary of the best ones! If you’re a Harry Potter fan, you’ll probably recognize most, if not all of these!
Top Hogsmeade Shops (Islands of Adventure)
- Ollivanders Wand Shop:
While there’s also an Ollivander’s in Diagon Alley, the Hogsmeade location is a little better in my opinion. You can browse an extensive selection of wands, including character replicas and interactive wands for casting spells around the park. - Honeydukes:
This colorful sweet shop is filled with iconic wizarding treats like Chocolate Frogs, Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans, and Fizzing Whizzbees. Just like in the books and movies! - Dervish and Banges:
This is the go-to shop for all things Hogwarts gear, from house robes and scarves to Quidditch equipment. - Filch’s Emporium of Confiscated Goods:
Located at the exit of Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, this shop has a mix of Hogwarts-themed merchandise and unique collectibles.
Insider Note: While there is technically a Zonko’s Joke Shop in Hogsmeade, the inside is no longer Zonko’s! Since opening Weasley Wizard Wheezes in Diagon Alley, all joke shop merchandise was moved there. The inside of Zonko’s has been converted to expand the sweets shop in Honeydukes!
Top Diagon Alley Shops (Universal Studios)
Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes:
This joke shop is one of the first things you’ll notice when you walk into Diagon Alley (aside from the giant dragon on top of Gringotts). It’s straight out of the book/movies, including the giant Weasley head outside and the iconic magical prank items like Extendable Ears, Pygmy Puffs, and U-No-Poo.
Borgin and Burkes (Knockturn Alley):
One of my favorite parts of Diagon Alley and often missed!! Located in the shadowy Knockturn Alley, it’s filled with eerie items like Death Eater masks, Horcrux replicas, and dark wizarding artifacts. You’ll find a lot of nods to the movies here too!
Madam Malkin’s Robes for All Occasions:
A large shop with each house’s wizarding robes, plus other clothes and accessories, including the iconic “H” and “R” sweaters that Mrs. Weasley made! There’s also a magical talking mirror!
Magical Menagerie:
This quirky pet shop sells plush versions of magical creatures like Hedwig, Crookshanks, and even a Niffler. You might even see a talking snake.
Gringotts Money Exchange:
Exchange your Muggle money for wizarding currency here! You can even interact with the goblin teller as you make your transaction. The currency works throughout the park or makes a fun souvenir to take home.
Quality Quidditch Supplies:
Grab all your quidditch gear here, including unique apparel for each house and some speciality items like real Quaffles and of course, the Golden Snitch!
Hidden Gems & Must Sees
As a frequent visitor, of course I have some hidden gems to include in this Harry Potter World guide!!
Both lands are full of magical details and Easter eggs that even the most devoted fans might overlook.
I have a full blog post on all of my favorite hidden gems, but here are my top favorites, plus some random must-sees throughout the park!
- Kreacher at 12 Grimmauld Place:
Outside Diagon Alley, near the entrance to King’s Cross Station, you’ll find the facade of 12 Grimmauld Place. If you look up at the second-floor window, you might just catch a glimpse of Kreacher, the Black family’s house-elf, peering out from behind the curtains. - Vanishing Cabinet in Borgin and Burkes:
Deep within Knockturn Alley, inside Borgin and Burkes, you’ll find the Vanishing Cabinet that played a pivotal role in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. If you stand near it, you might even hear the faint sound of a bird chirping from inside, just like in the movie. - The Magical Phone Booth:
Before entering Diagon Alley, look for the iconic red phone booth near the entrance. Step inside and dial “MAGIC” (62442) on the keypad to hear a special message from the Ministry of Magic! - Fire-Breathing Dragon:
The dragon perched atop Gringotts Bank isn’t just for show—every so often, it breathes a blast of fire into the sky. Listen for a low growl, which signals that the fiery spectacle is about to begin. - Talking Head on the Knight Bus:
Located just outside Diagon Alley, the Knight Bus is parked and ready for photo ops. Be sure to chat with the shrunken talking head, who’s as witty and sarcastic as he is in the movies.
Other Things to Consider Before Visiting
Where to Stay Near Harry Potter
If you’re planning a trip to Harry Potter World, staying at one of the official Universal Orlando Resort hotels can make your visit even more magical (and much more efficient).
The hotels are categorized into Value, Prime Value, Preferred, and Premier tiers. Staying here comes with exclusive perks that make your time at the parks smoother and more enjoyable, like Express Passes (Premier only) and early park entry (all hotels)!
Here’s a quick guide to the Universal Resort Hotels:
- Premier Hotels (Luxury with Extra Perks):
- Loews Royal Pacific Resort (Closest to Islands of Adventure)
This tropical-themed resort is a short walk or water taxi ride to CityWalk and the parks. Guests receive Unlimited Express Passes, a huge perk that lets you skip the lines at most rides, including those in Harry Potter World. - Hard Rock Hotel (Closest to Universal Studios Florida)
Just a 5-minute walk to the Universal Studios park gates, this music-themed hotel also includes Unlimited Express Passes! - Loews Portofino Bay Hotel
Designed to look like an Italian seaside village, this hotel offers beautiful theming and Unlimited Express Passes. It’s a bit farther than Royal Pacific or Hard Rock but still accessible via water taxi or a 10-minute walk.
- Loews Royal Pacific Resort (Closest to Islands of Adventure)
- Preferred Hotel (Mid-Tier with Great Comfort):
- Loews Sapphire Falls Resort
This Caribbean-inspired hotel offers a laid-back vibe and easy access to the parks via water taxi. While it doesn’t include Unlimited Express Passes, it’s still very close to CityWalk! Also walking distance to Universal’s Volcano Bay.
- Loews Sapphire Falls Resort
- Prime Value Hotels (Budget-Friendly):

- Universal’s Endless Summer Resorts (Dockside and Surfside)
When to Visit Harry Potter World
What time of year you visit Harry Potter World can have a huge impact on your experience!
For example, visiting on a Saturday in the height of summer is going to be extremely different from visiting on a Tuesday in mid-February.
If you’re looking to avoid crowds, I recommend visiting in mid-January through mid-February. Park admission peaks in December with the holidays, then typically ramps way down when kids return to school.
Plus, the weather in Orlando during this time of year is normally extremely pleasant, especially if there is a cold front!
Another good option is from mid-September (after Labor Day) to mid-November. Once school is pack in session, the crowds drop a bit. However, Halloween Horror Nights now runs at Universal Studios starting in September, which can bring in large crowds.
Overall, avoid holiday weekends if you can. If you can visit on a week day, even better!
If you don’t mind crowds and are looking for a pleasant experience, visiting Harry Potter World around the holidays can be extra magical. The park transforms into a “winter wonderland”, with festive decorations and the nighttime show on the Hogwarts Castle.
Summer is of course the most popular time of year to visit Harry Potter World thanks to summer vacation. This is also the rainy season in Florida, so afternoon thunderstorms are very common. Pack your poncho!
What to Wear to Harry Potter World
It wouldn’t be an ultimate guide to Harry Potter world without a packing list!
What you wear to Harry Potter World will of course depend on what time of year you are visiting. However, there are a few essentials that you’ll need no matter when your trip is!
- Comfortable Shoes:
You’ll be walking a lot!!! Expect to cover several miles throughout the parks. There is nothing worse than your feet hurting halfway through the day. Wear broken-in sneakers or supportive sandals to keep your feet happy! - Light, Breathable Clothing:
Orlando can get extremely hot and humid, especially from May to September. Choose lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics to stay cool. - Sunglasses and Sunscreen:
Please do not be that tourist that gets fried on their first day of vacation! The Florida sun is strong. Please protect your skin and wear sunscreen, bring sunglasses, and consider a hat! - Fanny Pack:
As mentioned earlier in this post, most Universal rides will make you put your bags in a free locker. However, some rides allow fanny packs, so that is what I wear to save time! - Poncho/Rain Jacket/Umbrella:
If you are visiting in the summer months, it’s probably going to rain on your trip. This doesn’t mean you have to leave the park! Most summer showers are over quickly. Packing a poncho, rain jacket, or umbrella will keep you dry so you can keep your day going. - Water Bottle and Snacks:
Most people don’t realize you are allowed to bring snacks and bottled water (or a reusable water bottle) into the park with you. This will help you save on food and drink costs inside!
Final Thoughts
